'Coming Into It's Own' Update (v4)

Hey you!

There's a new update in town, and it goes by the name of version 4 (DiscGolfVR_Demo_5_17). This character adds a lot of new features to DiscGolfVR, and it's been studying player feedback cycles to get the jump on your recreational activities! Better be careful. (Although it won't bite, so feel free to give it a try).

Here are the major features this rebel is bringing to the table:

  • Improved lighting
    • Including trees and vegetation, for a more realistic environmental blend

<-- Old vs. New -->

Old vs. New
  • Settings Menu
    • Options for: Hole Preview Speed, Advanced Throwing, Center Disc on Teleport
    • All settings menu options are saved across play sessions!
    • Hole Select panel, where you can travel directly to and play any hole

  • Collecting player data
    • This will help DiscGolfVR collect feedback on play patterns to improve the overall experience. And it's running in the background, so don't you worry about it :)

Version 4 knows you've been wanting to improve your throws in real-time, so it created the

  • Smart Watch
    • Players can now see the distance to basket, stroke difference, and various stats on their latest throw by monitoring their watch.
    • To swap content, simply tap the watch face

(\) Check it out in action (/)

  • Disc && Throwing Supports
    • Major tuning for throwing 'Rollers'

  • Unique colliders for each disc type (Driver skinny edge, Putter thick)
  • Iteration on Bouncy/Slide factors of discs when contacting ground
  • Release point of disc is now much closer to hand
  • Some balancing on forehand grip
  • Round of Sounds
    • Audio feedback from the SmartWatch added for scoring, strokes, out of bounds, etc
    • Disc flight sound (subtle, but when using 'Ariel Viewer' function, can hear it)
  • Bug Squashes
    • Player colliding with disc bag
    • Ariel Viewer Cloud hanging around / teleporting
    • New rule for disc landing on top of basket. Doesn't count as a stroke, set back to throwing direction
    • Edit: Many have exclaimed about the driver not being grabbable at some points, but this has been a ghost bug for me, and tricky to reproduce, so it may still be in the game. This is the first thing I will fix next iteration.

Now that you've met v4 and put everything in the past, let's look to the future:

As many of you know, there was a significant effort to gain publishing access to the Quest platform, by pitching the game to Oculus. Unfortunately, the concept was denied, and no feedback was given. This was mildly upsetting, but there is no doubt that DiscGolfVR will continue to be developed and will look to the bright future of a home on SideQuest. Another target on the radar is to try and get DiscGolfVR onto the Rift platform. Multiple tests have been submitted for this, and we are waiting to hear back :)

The next major movements for DiscGolfVR is in the arena of adding support for multiplayer. It's on the horizon! I've been prepping the game for this venture and am receiving another Quest next week to develop on. (Shoutout to @shdwlynx for supplying a great link for this purchase!)

Lastly, the lovely people at SideQuest have graciously reached out to offer another banner spot on their front page. There was so much support and feeback from the last one, I can't imagine what this one will be like! So, in preparation for this, DiscGolfVR will be receiving a full course of 18 holes! Be on the lookout for that in the next couple weeks, I will be sure to post vigorously about it's arrival. For now, please do enjoy these updates.

Thanks to all the players supporting this game, it's development, and giving large payloads of feedback to make this experience shine :)

Appreciation,

Alex

Holy smokes, you have been busy!  That is so much good stuff (that smart watch is exactly the kind of nerdy thing I love, haha) and I cannot wait to give it a shot tonight.  Your course designs are great and I look forward to being able to play your full fledged 18 hole course eventually.  I wonder if we can find some professional disc golf course designers who might be willing to donate some of their designs (because they're bored at home right now!) to future courses.  It's unfortunate that Oculus denied you, but I suspect it's only because they want to see more development (course content, as you're going to soon release, and multiplayer, which we all know is a larger endeavor) before they bring it into the fold.  I'm sure you'll get in on your next attempt!

Hey Shdw, so glad you enjoy the concept of the watch, I hope you'll like it in-game. Great to hear you look forward to more of the course, I'm working on the back 9 as we speak!

Having actual course designers help out with fleshing more courses is actually a great idea. I think after I release this next update (which will be around 6/5), I'll look into something like that, and see if we can't get someone on board :)

It is unfortunate about the Oculus pitch, but I'm grateful there are options to apply multiple times, definitely have high hopes for this in the near future.

Also, got my second Quest in, so am looking forward to starting multiplayer development!

I feel guilty that I have not found time to play the latest version, even with the three day weekend.  My only defense is that I was busy being productive IRL, heh.

You'll definitely get into the Oculus store once you've fleshed it out with more holes and multiplayer.  It would be stupid for them to pass it up at that point, as I assume that they get to skim at least a little off the top and FG is a great example of a relaxing social game for all ages.

Speaking of which, I'm sure it's already in your list, but private parties are an absolute must since I'm a crotchety old man (with crotchety old friends) when compared to most of the young ones who dominate the social VR landscape.

So excited to try this out today man. Keep truckin'!

Awesome, let me know what you think! Will do :)

Lol, it's so cool I donated another $2 and plan to do more. I love all the Ui fixes (Loading Screen, ext). Different colors on Par's & bogeys, disc throws feel better, SFX, terrain visual updates, Especially love how it saves the settings and there are so many cool new one's. Really like the disc not staying on top of basket. The Watch is REALLY cool. I understand the first page of the watch but am intrigued at what those numbers are on the second page, though I have my ideas. You got some insider DM type knowledge on that stuff bra?...lol. I'm sure I'll leave something out here but I can tell how much work you've been putting in just from a dev's standpoint. I'd like to try and do another video strictly focused on the game. I might need a bit more practice first...lol. I've only played one round but it was cool enough to stop and write this out. Sick Update Dude!

Hey Amra, thanks so much for the additional donation. So glad to hear you are enjoying the new updates, are things being more stable now in terms of bugs/glitches?

As for the watch, the second page is going to display stats from your most recent throw. The top left number is speed (in meters/second, although I should convert to Mph), the top right number is spin, and (once the disc lands) the bottom number will be distance (in feet).

Appreciate the appraisal and look forward to seeing the content you put out!

It seemed a lot more stable. I haven't done any VR for a couple days. Will probably do another video tonight or soon.
